Woodland Management

The Darch’s Wood Management Plan

The current five-year woodland management plan runs until 2026 and was established in partnership with English Woodlands Forestry Ltd

The main objectives of the plan are as follows:
  • Invasive species clearance: Rhododendron ponticum, Prunus laurocerasus (Cherry laurel);
  • Ride widening: create and improve habitat for woodland invertebrates;
  • Maintenance and enhancement of aquatic and sylvian ecosystems: including planting of native saplings;
  • Controlling and minimising the impact of browsing 'pests': Grey squirrel, deer;
  • Re-establishment of a traditional chestnut coppice cycle.
Having this plan in place allows us to draw on funds made available by the Forestry Commission to carry out the works outlined above. For more detailed information, the full woodland plan can be downloaded in .pdf form by clicking this link.

Health & Safety

Works in the wood are carried out partly by our contractor Agrifactors and, increasingly, by our team of volunteers at our regular working parties. With that in mind, we have carried out a thorough risk assessment and now have a Health & Safety Policy.
